How many types of plasterboard ceilings are there?
There are 2 types of plasterboard ceilings for you to choose from: closed plasterboard ceilings and open plasterboard ceilings.

Closed level plaster ceiling
Closed stepped plasterboard ceiling is a type of plasterboard ceiling with a special design with continuous and closed steps (steps), creating a ceiling space with depth and eye-catching feeling.
There are 4 characteristics to note when making a plasterboard ceiling:
- Step size: Height from 5cm to 20cm, depending on design and space requirements.
- Distance between steps: Ranging from 30cm to 60cm, creating a harmonious and balanced ratio.
- Materials used: Usually made from standard gypsum board with a thickness of 9mm or 12mm, combined with a frame system made of galvanized steel or aluminum profiles.
- Force-resistance: With a closed and seamless design, closed-level plasterboard ceilings have good load-bearing capacity and can withstand loads of up to 20kg/m.2.
Closed plasterboard ceilings bring a modern, luxurious and unique beauty to the space, while helping to effectively hide technical systems such as electrical pipes, water pipes and ventilation systems.

Open level plaster ceiling
Open-level plasterboard ceiling (lower-level ceiling with lights) is a plasterboard ceiling in which the positions of the gaps are kept intact, not filled, clearly showing each separate layer. In addition, customers can take advantage of the gaps to install backlights.
You need to pay attention to these 4 characteristics when making a plasterboard ceiling:
- Step size: Usually 5cm to 25cm in height, depending on the design and space requirements.
- Distance between steps: Fluctuates from 10cm to 30cm, creating an airy and eye-catching space
- Materials used: Usually made from standard gypsum board with a thickness of 9mm or 12mm, combined with a frame system made of galvanized steel or aluminum profiles.
- Customization capabilities: With an open design, open-level plasterboard ceilings allow flexible integration of lighting systems such as LED lights, spotlights or decorative lights, creating unique lighting effects.
Open-level plasterboard ceilings bring a modern, open beauty and create a more spacious feeling. At the same time, the open design helps improve ventilation and heat dissipation for the space, especially suitable for areas with ventilation requirements such as living rooms, dining rooms or offices.

4 simple and beautiful level plaster ceiling models
There are 4 beautiful and most popular plasterboard ceiling models: 1-level, 2-level, 3-level and round.
1-level plaster ceiling
A single-level plasterboard ceiling is a ceiling in which the frame system is completely hidden above the plasterboard and is installed so that there is only one gap between the two flat surfaces.

2-level plaster ceiling
Two-level plasterboard ceilings are installed in layers so that there are two gaps between the planes.

3-level plaster ceiling
3-level plasterboard ceiling is a type of ceiling with 3 gaps between different planes. With 3-level ceilings, sealing the first gap and leaving the remaining 2 gaps helps optimize the lighting system, increase ventilation and save 15-20% of electricity costs compared to completely closed ceilings.

Round level plaster ceiling
There are one or more circular shapes on this type of ceiling and are often used to draw attention to the center, where a ceiling fan or chandelier is mounted.

How to construct a stepped plaster ceiling
The number of levels of the plasterboard ceiling will depend on the number of layers of plasterboard applied to the ceiling. The process of installing a plasterboard ceiling consists of the following 5 main steps:
Step 1. Determine the ceiling height
- Minimum height from ceiling to floor is about 2.7m - 2.8m.
- Do not lower the ceiling too low, exceeding 20cm from the original ceiling (ceiling).
Step 2. Fix the wall trim
- We measure and mark the position that needs to be fixed on the wall.
- Use a hammer and concrete nails to fix the wall trim on the wall.
Step 3. Install the complete skeleton
- Hook the rod to the main bar at a distance of ≤ 400mm from the wall. The distance between the rod hanging points is 1m - 1.2m.
- Attach the threaded rods to the main bars and then rest the crossbars on top to create a vertical skeleton. Align the bars to balance, ensuring the skeleton creates a flat surface.
Step 4. Install plasterboard on the stepped frame system
- The length of the plasterboard is parallel to the main bar and perpendicular to the horizontal bar.
- Use a screwdriver to fix the plasterboard to the frame.
- Drill and cut holes in the plate at special locations such as: light sockets, ventilation equipment, etc.
Step 5. Process the joints and paint the plasterboard surface and finish.
Gypsum boards for recessed ceilings and stepped ceilings will have joints that need to be treated.
- First, we use tape to tape the seams.
- Next, we mix the joint treatment powder in the correct ratio and spread it.
- Finally, we wait for the putty to dry and then proceed to paint the entire ceiling surface.

Should I make a stepped plaster ceiling or a flat plaster ceiling?
To make the decision whether to make a plasterboard ceiling or a flat ceiling accurately, we need to base it on 2 factors:
- Construction area: With area under 20m2, flat plaster ceiling is the optimal choice because it helps create a more spacious feeling than stepped ceiling. Stepped ceiling is suitable for spaces from 25m2 or more. In addition, if the ceiling is too low, only about 2,6m high, you should not install a stepped ceiling.
- Financial capacity: More complicated installation and longer construction time make the cost of making a stepped ceiling much higher than a flat ceiling.
If you have a comfortable budget and own a large project, a multi-level plasterboard ceiling will be the right choice. The unique shapes will break the monotony and boredom of the traditional flat ceiling, bringing a new breeze into the interior space.
