What is PE plastic? Properties and applications of PE resins in the material industry

PE (Polyethylene or Polythene, Polyethylene) is a thermoplastic that is water-resistant, mold-proof and electrically insulating. When hardened, the product is highly durable and non-toxic. Let's learn more about Kosmos PE granules  right below.

1

What is PE plastic?

PE . Plastic is a thermoplastic that is consumed over 60 tons per year. PE's English name is (Polyethylene). The plastic is clear white and easy to color during the manufacturing process. With high thermal conductivity, anti-conductive and waterproof properties, this product is often used to produce outdoor materials.

Characteristics and classification of PE granules

PE plastic beads are clear white, slightly translucent and easy to process. Outstanding features of PE are:

  • Insoluble in water even under high temperature conditions.
  • Can be used continuously at temperature 60 - 85 ° C (The melting point of this plastic is about 115–135 °C).
  • Has natural corrosion resistance and resistance to chemicals, most acids, bases, and strong minerals.
  • Solid form of Polyethylene no toxicity, possible Sterilize by boiling Therefore, it is often used as a food container.

However, the disadvantage of PE is that it easily smells when used and has an unpleasant odor when melted.

This type of plastic is divided into 8 sort by proportion, molecular mass , and degree of suture as follows:

VLDPE plastic

VLDPE is a type of Polyethylene plastic with extremely low density (0,880 – 0,915 g/cm³). This is an amorphous substance, flexible and very tough. Typically, VLDPE plastic is used to create films, protective gloves, etc.

LDPE plastic

LDPE is a low density polyethylene plastic (0,910 – 0,925 g/cm³). Thanks to their softness, flexibility, and elasticity, they are often used as packaging, plastic bags, or other highly elastic plastic materials.

LLDPE plastic

LDPE is a low density polythene plastic (0,910 – 0,925 g/cm³) and straight circuit. This type is specialized for making toys, lids, containers, cables and pipes, etc.

MDPE plastic

mdpe is a medium density polythene plastic (0,926 – 0,940 g/cm³). They are used to make air pipes and fittings, screws and shipping sacks.

HDPE plastic

HDPE is a high density polythene plastic (0.93 – 0,97 g/cm³) and has good resistance to mold, insects, and rot. This is also a quite durable material, has higher tensile strength than LDPE and is recyclable. They are often used to make items such as plastic bottles, water pipes, etc.

UHMWPE plastic

Bearing density is not as high as HDPE but UHMWPE is Polyethylene plastic with extremely high molecular weight (about 3.1 – 5.67 million). The density of UHMWPE is approx 0,935 - 0,930 g/cc. This is a hard plastic that can be used as a lining for ammunition barrels.

PEX plastic/XLPE

PEX/XLPE is cross-linked polyethylene plastic, used to make insulating wires, pipes or plastic films.

Cross-linking is the phenomenon of cross-linking different Polyethylene chains together. During this process, the polymer is tightly linked and cannot be separated.

HDXLPE plastic

HDXLPE Polyethylene plastic that undergoes a cross-linking process with high density cross-links. This type of plastic is used in systems such as heating systems, plumbing systems, cooling systems or as chemical storage materials.

Application of PE resin in the material industry

Hard PE granules has excellent impact resistance, so it is manufactured as a crate or household item. In addition, PE's anti-chemical and water-insoluble properties are utilized by humans as pipelines. In the end, this plastic is the material for wire wrapping today because of its 100% electrical insulation. On the other hand, types Flexible PE be used as bags or wrappers.

PE wood – New exterior decoration material

Wood Plastic PE is a material mixed between wood pulp, PE plastic powder (usually HDPE) and other additives. This type of material is quite new in the Vietnamese market but is very popular in the European market such as the US, Germany,... Wood and plastic materials whose English name is WPC - Wood plastic composite. PE plastic material in WPC can be replaced with other plastics such as PVC and PP.

  • PE plastic is not as hard as PP plastic.
  • PE plastic is more weather resistant than PVC plastic.
