Instructions for installing flexible stone panels for ceiling cladding using proper techniques.

Flexible stone cladding panels are a new generation of ceiling cladding material, suitable for both interior and exterior spaces. Composed of 65% quartz sand, 10% mineral powder, 10% heavy calcium, 10% adhesive, and 5% additives, the product is lightweight and thin. This allows the panels to be bent in multiple directions with flexibility while maintaining stability, preventing bulging or cracking.

These advantages help to speed up construction, reduce the load on the structure, optimize costs, and significantly shorten completion time.

In this article, Kosmos will introduce and provide detailed instructions on 6 steps for installing ceilings using flexible stone cladding panels.

Step 1: Prepare materials and tools before starting construction.

Supplies

Here are 3 types of materials you need to prepare when installing flexible stone panels on the ceiling:

  1. Flexible stone cladding panels (lightweight, thin thickness options)
  2. Specialized grout or A100/A500 grout
  3. Tile adhesive.

Note regarding adhesive:

It is advisable to choose a sealant with low or no alkalinity to avoid the "salt seepage" effect (discoloration/whitening).

Tool

To install flexible stone cladding panels on your ceiling, you will need the following 8 tools:

  1. Laser leveling machine
  2. Ink ribbon
  3. Handheld cutting machine or utility knife
  4. Steel trowel
  5. Sawtooth
  6. Rubber roller or rubber trowel
  7. Support beam
  8. Paper masking tape.

Step 2: Treatment of construction surface

To ensure a secure and durable ceiling system and minimize peeling during use, choosing the right ceiling core is crucial. Below are two recommended ceiling core options:

  1. Rigid gypsum board ceiling (Calcium Silicate): It has high rigidity, good moisture resistance, and warp resistance. The stable surface allows for stronger adhesive bonding, making it particularly suitable for areas with high humidity or requiring long-term durability.
  2. Plywood ceiling: The structure is sturdy, with good screw and adhesive adhesion. It is easy to install, flexible in surface preparation, and suitable for many different types of cladding materials.

👉 Recommendations: The surface should be flat, stable, clean, and dry before application to achieve optimal adhesion.

2. Additional treatment depending on the surface type.

Only apply the steps below if the surface does not meet standard substrate conditions.

  • Case 1: New ceiling surface

Sufficient curing time must be ensured for the cement hydration process to be fully completed (over 14 days in summer, over 21 days in winter). Before tiling, it is mandatory to apply an alkali-resistant primer to prevent salt efflorescence and discoloration.

  • Case 2: Old ceiling surface

The old paint that is chalky, peeling, or has lost its adhesion must be completely removed. Hollow, cracked, or loose old tiles must be chipped away and re-treated with specialized mortar to restore a stable surface.

The peeling paint/cracked tiles on the old ceiling surface need to be removed.

  • Case 3: High humidity areas (Kitchen, toilet, etc.)

Areas frequently exposed to steam or direct water must be treated with a standard waterproofing solution before applying the cladding panels. Tile installation should only be carried out when the waterproofing layer is dry and has reached the adhesion strength recommended by the manufacturer.

Waterproofing treatment is required for construction areas with high humidity.

Step 3: Measure and cut the flexible stone cladding panels.

This process consists of three main steps, and is especially important for long ceiling sections or those with many corner intersections:

  1. Use a laser level to establish the horizontal and vertical alignment of the surface. From there, determine the baseline as a reference point for tile installation, avoiding elevation discrepancies or misalignment of the tile layers.

  1. After establishing the standard elevation, use a chalk line to accurately mark the positions of the circuit lines according to the layout drawing, ensuring uniformity and alignment.

  1. Cut the flexible stone cladding panels to the measured dimensions. A handheld cutting machine with a fine blade or a sharp utility knife can be used to ensure a clean, sharp cut and minimize fraying at the edges.

*Kosmos recommends:

  • It's advisable to test the tiles by laying them on the floor first before laying them to check the stone patterns and grout lines.
  • The ideal temperature for ceiling installation is between 5 and 35°C. Avoid installation during intense sunlight, rain, or strong winds.

Step 4: Apply specialized adhesive.

The process of applying adhesive before installing flexible stone panels on the ceiling is as follows:

  1. Apply the coating. tile adhesive Apply the adhesive to the ceiling surface where it needs to be installed. Apply the adhesive only to the section of ceiling being tiled.

  1. Next, use a notched trowel to spread the adhesive in the same direction to create even grooves. The grooves should be continuous and sharp to increase adhesion, ensuring a stronger bond between the material and the substrate.

Step 5: Install the flexible stone panels on the ceiling.

After the adhesive layer has been properly applied, proceed with installing the flexible stone panels following these steps:

  1. Place the panel in the predetermined position. When placing the panel, gently press down on the entire surface with your hands to secure it in place and prevent it from shifting.

  1. Later right away Use a rubber roller or rubber trowel to apply pressure, following the principle of applying from the inside out and from left to right, to ensure 100% contact area with the adhesive.
Immediately use a rubber roller or rubber trowel to press down from top to bottom and from left to right.

  1. Install the ceiling panels using the second panel, leaving a gap of 1,5-3mm between the panels to allow the material to expand and contract due to temperature and humidity changes.

  1. Continue tiling until the entire ceiling surface is finished.

Note: During the installation process, additional support struts can be used for the first 24 hours to help secure the panels before the adhesive dries. This method helps prevent the panels from sagging when installed on the ceiling.

Support stakes should be used during the first 24 hours to secure the cladding panels.

*Kosmos recommends:

  • Always use a ruler/your hand to check the sealant during the first 15-20 minutes (while it's still wet) to make any necessary adjustments.
  • After at least 24 hours from application, once the adhesive has reached its initial bonding strength, the surface can be tested by tapping with a rubber mallet.

Step 6: Apply grout to finish the surface of the cladding.

For the joints between the panels, users can use sealant (or T-shaped trim). Note that grouting should only be done after the adhesive has reached its initial bonding strength, at least 24 hours after installation.

1. Apply two parallel strips of masking tape along both edges of the grout, ensuring they do not completely fill the grout gap or leave any gaps in the surface of the tile. Press the tape firmly to ensure the grout cannot seep back into the flexible stone surface.

Apply masking tape parallel to both sides of the seal.

2. Use specialized grout or high-elasticity A100/A500 grout to accommodate the thermal expansion of the material. Immediately after applying the grout, use a specialized grout smoothing tool (grout smoothing ball, rubber squeegee, etc.) to evenly smooth the grout lines.

Use specialized grout or A100/A500 sealant to seal gaps at male/female corners.

3. Remove the masking tape while the grout is still slightly damp (not completely dry and hardened) to avoid creating jagged, chipped, and unsightly grout lines. If any small amount of adhesive accidentally gets on the panel, wipe it off immediately with a clean, damp cloth or sponge.

Remove the masking tape and re-inspect all the grout lines.

Note: Avoid stepping on, pouring water on, or vibrating the surface for the first 48 hours. Wait 3-7 days (until the adhesive is completely dry) before proceeding with further decorating steps.
