What is the structure of industrial wood?
Engineered wood is made from natural wood by-products such as wood chips, wood powder, crushed branches, mixed with adhesive and pressed under high pressure. These materials are mixed with specialized glues such as Urea Formaldehyde, Melamine or Phenol Formaldehyde. The mixture is then supplemented with moisture-proof and anti-termite additives. Finally, the whole is pressed under high temperature to form a uniform board.

According to a report from Mordor Intelligence, the global Laminate flooring market size in 2024 was valued at around USD 53,45 billion and is expected to grow to USD 67,49 billion by 2029, representing a CAGR of more than 4,8% during the forecast period 2024 – 2029.
What are the advantages of industrial wood panels?
Engineered wood panels are popular in construction and interior decoration thanks to the following 7 advantages:
- Affordability: Engineered wood panels are used to replace natural wood at a price 30-50% lower, suitable for many customer segments from popular to high-end.
- Consistent product quality: Produced on a modern industrial line, wooden boards ensure high stability, with little cracking, shrinkage or termites.
- Diverse designs and colors: There are hundreds of options for colors, wood grains, and surface coatings (Melamine, Laminate, Acrylic, etc.) to easily meet different aesthetic requirements.
- Quick construction: Lightweight material, easy to cut and assemble, convenient during installation, thereby saving 20 - 30% of construction time compared to natural wood.
- Flexible application: Widely used in home, office, showroom interiors... from partitions, wall panels, floors to kitchen cabinets, shelves, tables and chairs.
- Stable durability: Many types of boards such as moisture-resistant green core MDF or HDF have good load-bearing capacity, anti-warping, and an average lifespan of 10-20 years.
- Environmental friendlinessBy utilizing planted forest wood and recycled materials, industrial wood panels contribute to limiting the exploitation of natural wood, reducing pressure on forest resources.

What are the disadvantages of industrial wood?
Industrial wood has 4 limitations that investors need to consider carefully:
- Limited bearing capacity: Compared to natural wood, engineered wood often has lower mechanical strength, especially in humid environments or when subjected to heavy loads. Some plywood or MDF lines only achieve static bending strength of about 18-22 MPa, significantly lower than that of solid natural wood (30-80 MPa).
- Lower lifespan than natural wood: The average lifespan is usually only about 10-15 years, much shorter than natural wood which can last for decades or even centuries.
- Aesthetics are not as unique as natural wood: The beauty of engineered wood comes mainly from the surface coating, so the authenticity and luxury are difficult to compare with natural wood grain.
- Difficult to repair when damaged: Engineered wood is very difficult to restore when it is blistered or cracked. In most cases, the product needs to be completely replaced. Natural wood can be sanded, polished or repainted for reuse.

How many types of industrial wood are there?
Engineered wood is produced in 7 different classifications., including: MDF, HDF, Plywood, Okal / PB chipboard, CDF wood board, finger jointed wood and heart-shaped board. Each type has its own structure, characteristics and price, suitable for each usage need.
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) industrial wood
MDF industrial wood is one of the most popular types of industrial wood today. This material contains 70-75% finely ground wood powder (collected from branches, twigs and excess wood in solid wood production). The rest is adhesive, wood preservative and specialized additives.
The mixture is compressed under hot-pressing pressure usually fluctuates around 3–6MPa (equivalent to ~30–60 kgf/cm²) depending on the process, thickness, material type and glue used. Therefore, MDF wood panels have a smooth surface, are easy to construct and have high stability.

MDF is divided into 3 product lines: Regular MDF, moisture-resistant green core MDF, fire-resistant red core MDF, meeting different usage conditions such as office apartment interior design, kitchen cabinets, tables and chairs and popular industrial wood products.

HDF (High Density Fiberboard) industrial wood
HDF (High Density Fiberboard) is a type of industrial wood core produced from natural wood powder from planted forests. The wood is finely ground, mixed with specialized glue and pressed under high pressure, creating a solid board. The composition of HDF contains 80 - 85% natural wood powder, helping to ensure safety for health and environmental friendliness.
HDF wood is a suitable choice for projects that emphasize durability and aesthetics, especially suitable for interior items that require good moisture and termite resistance.

HDF industrial wood is currently produced in 3 different lines including Standard HDF, Green HDF (green core) and Black HDF (black core – CDF) to meet a variety of needs from interior panels to flooring.

Plywood
Plywood is one of the high-end industrial wood materials., formed from many thin layers of wood (veneer) pressed tightly with specialized glue. These layers are arranged perpendicularly or diagonally to each other, thanks to which the board achieves high stability, minimizes warping, shrinkage and increases load-bearing capacity.
Not only used in furniture production, Plywood is also an important solution in construction, typically for formwork, partitions or items requiring high durability. With the water-resistant Plywood line, this material is also used for outdoor items with superior durability compared to MDF or MFC.

Okal Particle Board / PB (Particle Board)
Okal particle board is produced from natural wood materials such as shavings, sawdust, bark or wood chips. These materials are crushed, mixed with glue and specialized additives, then pressed under high pressure to form a board with a flat surface and certain stability. Okal particle board has 4 outstanding features including:
- The surface is quite flat, relatively smooth, easy to construct and process.
- Light weight, convenient in transportation and installation
- Thickness varies, commonly in the range 9mm, 12mm, 18mm to 25mm.
- Usually surface coating painted, veneer, laminate or melamine.
Okal particle board is used in the production of office furniture, cabinets, partitions or as a core layer for decorative surfaces. With the advantages of low cost and high applicability, this is a suitable choice for projects that need to optimize economics but still ensure aesthetics.

Compact Density Fiberboard (CDF)
CDF wood panel is an outstanding improved version of Black HDF (Black HDF). Produced by special compression technology, CDF has a dense structure, outstanding hardness but still maintains light weight and thin thickness. Thanks to that, this material is increasingly popular in high-end interior projects, especially in locations that are often exposed to humidity.
Due to its high price, CDF wood core has not been widely used in the market, mainly appearing in high-end interior projects. This type of material is often chosen for items that require sophisticated cutting, requiring high aesthetics such as coffee table partitions, sink areas or kitchen spaces.

Laminated wood
Laminated wood is a material made from many small, processed natural wood bars, bonded together with specialized glue and pressed under high pressure. This process helps create large, uniform-thickness wood panels, minimizing warping and shrinkage compared to solid wood.
The types of wood used to produce laminated wood include rubber, mahogany, pine, acacia, cinnamon or rosewood. During the production process, the small wooden bars will go through many stages such as cutting, surface treatment, sanding, coating and gluing.

Block board
Heart-shaped plywood is a high-end industrial wood product made from a core of many natural wooden bars joined together, compressed, then covered with a thin layer of veneer on top and bottom. Thanks to this structure, the board has stable durability, is less warped and has good load-bearing capacity. This is the reason why this type of plywood is increasingly widely used in the production of furniture such as desks, cabinets, beds or partitions.

How many types of industrial wood surface coatings are there?
- Melamine: Scratch resistant, moisture resistant and long lasting color, easy to clean and diverse patterns.
- Veneer: Brings the natural, luxurious beauty of real wood while still maintaining the stability of industrial wood.
- UVs: Environmentally friendly, glossy surface, able to protect the laminated board from light, water and temperature, suitable for many high-end interior applications.
- Laminates: Durable, abrasion resistant and available in a variety of patterns.
- Acrylic: Mirror surface, bright color and good scratch resistance.
- Topcoat (PU, flat, 2K): High durability, anti-mold, anti-termite effectively.
