Lightweight concrete panel: Advantages and disadvantages, types, applications and quotes 2025
Lightweight concrete panel is a low-weight, sheet-shaped building material that replaces traditional concrete in modern constructions. This is an advanced building material with 6 advantages such as: Superior insulation (heat transfer coefficient of only 0.1 - 0.2 W/mK), fast construction, diverse applications (walls, partitions, floors, roofs, ceilings), fire resistance up to 1200°C in 2 - 3 hours, safe for health and environmentally friendly.
However, this material has 3 limitations: Lower load-bearing capacity than monolithic concrete (3,5 - 7,5 MPa compared to 20 - 40 MPa), requires high assembly techniques (joints must be tight) and is not suitable for complex architecture with many elaborate details.
There are 4 popular lightweight concrete panel lines in Vietnam: ALC/AAC (weight 600 – 650kg/m³, sound insulation 40 – 45dB, fire resistance 2 – 4 hours), CLC (sound insulation 43 – 60dB, fire resistance 240 minutes, weight 55 – 65kg/panel), EPS (density 8 – 20kg/m³, heat transfer coefficient 0,018 – 0,020Kcal/m/°C, heat resistance up to 120°C) and Cemboard (lifespan over 50 years, direct fire resistance 2 hours).

Regarding price, lightweight concrete panels have fluctuation depending on the type: ALC and CLC from 303.750 - 384.750 VND/panel, foam bricks 135.600 VND/piece, EPS from 391.500 - 472.500 VND/panel, EPS bricks 145.200 - 260.457 VND/piece, Cemboard from 265.000 - 425.000 VND/panel (depending on thickness 12 - 20mm). Note that prices are for reference only and may vary depending on the area, quantity and technical requirements of each project.
What are the advantages of lightweight concrete panels?
Lightweight concrete panels are the perfect alternative to traditional concrete walls thanks to the following 6 advantages:
- Superior insulation: Lightweight concrete panels are designed with foam structure or insulation materials such as EPS, ALC. Thereby helping to reduce the heat transfer coefficient to 0,1 - 0,2 W/mK (compared to traditional concrete of 1,5 - 2,0 W/mK) and reduce room temperature by 4 - 9°C.
- Fast and flexible construction: With a weight of only 1/3 to 1/5 compared to traditional concrete (600 – 800 kg/m³), lightweight concrete panels are easy to cut and install. With a project of 100m², 4 skilled workers can construct and complete lightweight concrete panel cladding in just 2 – 3 days.
- Diverse applications: Widely used for many items such as partitions, floors, walls, ceilings.
- Effective fire protection: Thanks to its special structure with fire-resistant additives, lightweight concrete panels can withstand temperatures up to 1.200°C for 2-3 hours without deformation.
- Health safety: Containing no asbestos – a substance that is seriously harmful to human health, lightweight concrete panels are manufactured from safe materials that do not emit toxic gases.
- Environmental friendliness: Production process reduces CO2 emissions, contributing to protecting the living environment.

What are the limitations of concrete panels?
When choosing concrete panels, investors and contractors need to note the following 3 limitations:
- Lower bearing capacity than monolithic concrete: Compared to traditional concrete (compressive strength 20 - 40 MPa), lightweight concrete panels only reach 3,5 - 7,5 MPa. Therefore, this material is not suitable for structures requiring high load-bearing capacity, such as foundations or columns with high loads. For projects requiring high mechanical strength, it is necessary to combine panels with steel reinforcement or steel frames.
- High technical construction requirements: Panel assembly is not simply assembling concrete blocks, construction workers must have the skills to handle joints, ensuring the tightness of the project.
- Not suitable for complex architectural designs: Panel is suitable for projects with simple, square designs. When applied to projects with many sophisticated details, curves or non-standard cross-sections, processing will take a lot of time and cost.

What are the applications of precast lightweight concrete panels?
Precast lightweight concrete panels are widely used materials in the following 5 construction categories:
- Construction of enclosing walls and thermal insulation partitionsWith soundproofing and heat insulation capabilities, lightweight concrete panels help create a quiet and private space.
- Construction of prefabricated floorsThanks to its light weight and stable durability, lightweight concrete panels are the optimal choice for floors, mezzanine floors or high-rise building floors.
- Foundation for construction: In high-rise projects, using lightweight panels to raise the foundation will help reduce the overall load.
- Insulated roofLightweight concrete panels are used for roof construction, helping to reduce heat absorption and significantly improve ventilation in the house.
- Suspended ceiling construction: In buildings with high ceilings such as apartments, schools, hospitals, panels can be used as suspended ceilings.

How many types of precast lightweight concrete panels are there?
To meet the diverse needs of construction projects, precast lightweight concrete panels are manufactured with 4 popular product lines: ALC/AAC lightweight concrete panels, CLC foam concrete panels, EPS lightweight concrete core panels, and Cemboard panels.
ALC/AAC lightweight concrete panels
Lightweight concrete panels ALC/AAC are construction materials produced from autoclaved aerated concrete. The main components include cement (20 – 30%), quartz sand or fly ash (50 – 60%), lime, gypsum and aluminum powder (0,05 – 0,08%). This small amount of aluminum powder acts as a foaming agent, creating the characteristic hollow structure of ALC/AAC. This superior property helps the concrete block have a dry weight of less than 1.000kg/m³.

According to international standards, ALC (Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete) and AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) have no difference in material nature. In Vietnam, ALC refers to precast panels, used in assembly items such as wall panels, floors or roof panels. Meanwhile, AAC is often used to refer to autoclaved aerated concrete bricks, often used for building walls, partitions, bricks, floor panels or lintels.

CLC foam concrete panel
CLC foam concrete panel, or non-autoclaved lightweight concrete (Cellular Lightweight Concrete), is a building material with a closed-cell structure that accounts for 70-80% of the volume. The ingredients include cement (20-30%), fine sand or fly ash (40-50%), foaming agent, polypropylene or glass fiber and additives. The mixture is mixed well and cured under natural conditions, thereby reducing production costs compared to AAC/ALC.
Thanks to its inorganic properties, CLC panels do not emit smoke or toxic gases in the event of a fire, ensuring safety for living and working spaces. This material is also highly appreciated for its sound insulation ability of 43 - 60 dB, thanks to its closed-cell structure that helps to both absorb sound and reduce sound transmission more effectively than many traditional building materials.
