What is AC index? What is the meaning of AC standards in laminate flooring?
The AC index is something that many customers ignore when buying laminate flooring. However, they have an important influence on future use. The AC standard represents the scratch resistance of the floor and has 6 levels from AC1 - AC6. Each level will correspond to the appropriate installation space. Thickness will also affect the AC rating of the flooring, usually a 12mm floor will have a higher AC rating than an 8mm floor.
What is AC index?
AC index or standard (Abrasion Criteria) is an extremely important technical parameter of laminate flooring, contributing to evaluating the quality of the floor. They represent the ability of laminate flooring to resist scratches and surface abrasion. When buying wooden floors, you should pay attention to AC standards to choose the type of floor that suits your needs.
This standard is determined by using a gyroscope and friction on the surface to test the abrasion resistance, scratch resistance and hardness of the wooden floor. The spinner will apply friction force to the wooden floor, then check the number of revolutions until scratches appear, the number of revolutions will correspond to the AC index.
Scale for measuring AC parameters of wooden floors
AC standards are divided into many levels from AC1 to AC6, representing increasing levels when subjected to friction.
AC index | Index information |
AC1 (≥ 500 revolutions) | Surface scratch resistance is extremely low, AC1 boards cannot be used for flooring because of their low strength and are only used for wall and ceiling cladding. |
AC2 (≥ 1000 revolutions) | Low bearing capacity, not used for flooring. AC2 should only be used for ceilings, walls, and places with little friction |
AC3 (≥ 2000 revolutions) | Has good strength and scratch resistance and can be used for common living areas in the house, small hotel rooms, etc. |
AC4 (≥ 4000 revolutions) | Good scratch resistance, can be installed in all rooms in the house, places with higher density such as offices, shops, cafes,... |
AC5 (≥ 6000 revolutions) | High abrasion resistance, very good scratch resistance of the floor surface. Wood floors reaching AC5 level can be installed in places with high traffic density such as showrooms, shopping centers, etc. |
AC6 (≥ 8500 revolutions) | As the highest level of AC standards, the floor surface has the ability to withstand extremely heavy traffic such as airports. |
How does floor thickness affect the AC rating?
Thickness of floorboards also contributes to affecting AC standards.
- Laminate flooring has thickness 8 mm, designed with abrasion-resistant surface that meets magnetic standards AC3 – AC4 Used for installation of residential floors.
- Laminate flooring 12 mm Designed with a highly abrasive surface AC4 – AC5 for installation in public locations in crowded residential areas or stores serving a lot of traffic.
